What is Combination Treatment?

Combination treatment is the integration of medication with psychotherapy, an approach backed by extensive scientific evidence for its efficacy in treating many common psychiatric conditions. A common example is the use of antidepressant medication combined with psychotherapy to treat depression or anxiety. Either medication or psychotherapy can be effective treatments by themselves; however, evidence has shown that, in certain cases, combined treatment may be preferable.

At The Midtown Practice, our clinicians possess expertise in both psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. This dual proficiency enables us to offer, when appropriate, a holistic integration of both treatment modalities. Initial treatment at The Midtown Practice may involve therapy alone, medication alone, or a combination of both. As your treatment progresses, we always remain flexible, and if indicated will discuss with you adjusting our approach by adding therapy or medication, or by tapering off medication if it no longer seems indicated.

The use of combined treatment can provide superior effects and is supported by scientific evidence. A key feature of our practice is the seamless collaboration between our in-house therapists and prescribers, ensuring coordinated care in order to help you experience meaningful improvements in wellbeing and attain your treatment goals.

When Do We Consider Combination Treatment?

We consider combination treatment based on your preferences, your emotional state and functioning, and, if you are already in treatment with therapy or medication alone, how that is progressing. Some people come to us for combination treatment because they are seeking the most effective and intensive treatment available. If you are unsure about whether combination treatment or therapy alone is the best approach for you, we will help you make that decision. For example, if you are severely depressed or your anxiety is so marked that it is interfering with your ability to function, then combination might be the right approach for you.

Do I Have To Take Medication Forever?

Absolutely not. We believe in using medication judiciously. If prescribed, we will carefully monitor its effects, assessing both benefits and side effects. We will periodically review your treatment together, considering whether to continue, adjust dosage, change medication, or taper off. Some patients experience significant benefits without side effects and choose to continue long-term. Others may find that their need for medication has passed after it has helped them overcome a hurdle and make progress in psychotherapy. Our commitment is to work collaboratively with you, helping you make informed decisions about when to use medication and when to discontinue it.
