For parents of young children
I specialize in supporting parents and families through the complex, often tender stages of raising children. As a co-author of Parenting Your Toddler and a longtime leader of parent groups at Barnard College, I bring both clinical insight and real-world perspective to this work. My background in journalism shapes how I listen for the deeper stories beneath day-to-day challenges, while my approach blends psychodynamic insight with practical tools to help families create meaningful, lasting change.

With nearly two decades of experience, including extensive trauma-focused work with children and families, I bring a steady, informed presence to complex transitions. My approach to family therapy in Midtown integrates psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapy, grounded in a nonjudgmental, identity-affirming lens that supports families of all backgrounds and structures in building clarity, stability, and connection.

FAQs about family therapy
The family system is one of the most fundamental and powerful attachment systems across all cultures. When families do not function well or when family bonds are threatened, it can cause enormous distress and be quite destabilizing. Family therapy is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on the interpersonal dynamics between family members. Every human and every family experiences stress, hardships, conflict, and struggle. However, when these unduly impact the way in which family members relate or connect to one another, family therapy can be a useful tool to support the system, which in turn can enhance the well-being of family members.
At the beginning of treatment, the family therapist will explore the issues and what each member hopes to get out of treatment, and will work with the family to co-create goals. The therapist will work actively to maintain a space where family members can listen to each other with curiosity and respond to one another honestly and empathetically. This enhances communication, supporting members in conveying their perspectives, wants, and needs, while building understanding and strengthening positive connections. Each session depends on what the family needs at the time, so every session varies. Family therapy sessions at The Midtown Practice are 60 minutes long and can take place in person or virtually.
Family therapy can involve some or all members of a family experiencing difficulties. Depending on the situation, the treatment can include some or all members of the nuclear family, members of extended families, blended families, and/or individuals who are part of the family system who are not related biologically or legally. If you are not sure who to involve in family treatment or even whether family therapy could help, a consultation with a family therapist can help you decide.
Families often seek support during periods of stress or transition, such as parenting challenges, ongoing conflict, loss, or when one member is struggling. That said, you don’t have to wait for things to escalate. Many families begin family therapy in Midtown proactively to improve communication, deepen connection, and navigate challenges with more clarity and support.
Family therapy is sometimes covered by insurance. The Midtown Practice is an out-of-network provider and does not bill insurance directly. However, we provide detailed invoices that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. We recommend checking your out-of-network mental health benefits in advance so you understand your coverage and expected costs.
