What is Psychopharmacology?

Throughout history and across cultures, humans have used various substances to alter their mental states and manage their emotions. In recent times, remarkable advancements in neuroscience, including groundbreaking research on neural circuits and brain chemistry, have paved the way for the development of potent medications targeting a wide range of psychological symptoms and conditions.

Psychopharmacology, the science of using medications to enhance mental well-being, has become a cornerstone of modern psychiatric treatment. These medications are designed to improve mood, sharpen mental focus, alleviate anxiety, resolve sleep issues, and address various other psychiatric concerns. The integration of psychopharmacology into treatment has significantly contributed to our progress in managing common psychiatric disorders, offering hope and improving the quality of life for millions of individuals worldwide.

At TMP, we have two types of prescribers: Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners. Our clinicians have an extensive understanding of basic neuroscience, pharmacology, clinical medicine, and psychiatric diagnosis. If we decide to prescribe medication, we always aim to select an agent with maximum clinical benefits and the fewest side effects. We realize each person responds to medication differently and that it is our role to consistently assess and make adjustments to ensure you have the best possible outcome.

How do medications work to help mood?

Psychotropic medications, the medicines used to treat psychiatric conditions and symptoms, are a result of extensive research and development. They work primarily by modulating the actions of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers that brain cells, or neurons, use to communicate with one another. These medications increase or decrease the naturally occurring chemicals in the brain. For example, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), the medications commonly prescribed for depression and anxiety, work by increasing serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with happiness and satisfaction. They are some of the most widely prescribed and well-tolerated medications used in healthcare today.

Medication, therapy, or both?

At The Midtown Practice, we believe in a comprehensive approach to mental health. This might include medication, therapy, lifestyle modifications, or a combination of these factors. If, after a thorough assessment, we collectively decide that medication is the best approach, we will make a selection based on your symptoms and history. We then closely monitor your response and adjust the dose as needed. Some of our patients find long-term medication beneficial, while others use it only as needed. Still others use it temporarily to manage difficult circumstances until they develop skills and strategies to work through their challenges.
